Want to meet me? Have a cup of Coffee?
It is a real regular thing that readers of my column want to meet me when they come to Davao. Actually, it is one thing that I really enjoy about writing this column and interacting with readers of this site. However, over the past year or so, it has gotten to the point that I often meet up to a dozen different readers every week, and the number is growing. That’s right, often more than one person per day wants to get together with me, have a cup of coffee or whatever. With this number of requests to get together, sometimes my time is in very high demand.
Because of such frequent demand for my time, last year I wrote an article about an idea that I had come up with in this regard. In the article, I said that I planned to start setting up one day per week where I would do my work in a public place, like a coffee shop or restaurant, and that I would announce where that place was and the time schedule when I would be there. Well, a few months have slipped by, and so far I never really got the system all set up! But, today, I am ready to announce some firm plans on how I will work this system.
For a couple of months now, I have been swimming every morning at Holiday Health Spa on F. Torres Street in Davao. I generally swim every weekday morning, Mondays through Fridays. I generally arrive at Holiday Health Spa at 9am, and I swim from 9 until 10. After swimming, I go to the Coffee Shop in Holiday Health Spa for a cup of coffee until 10:30 or 10:45.
Starting immediately, I would enjoy entertaining guests at Holiday Health Spa during this time, every weekday morning. If you want to come at 9am and go swimming for an hour with me, you would be most welcome. Or, if you just want a cup of coffee and a good talk, meet me in the Coffee Shop at the Health Spa at 10am or so. If you choose to swim you will need to pay for a single day use of the Spa, which is P100 per day. You can go to the Coffee Shop for free, though.
If you want to get together with me at some other time of the day, or in a different location, I will still try to fit that into my schedule as often as possible too. You can contact me through my contact form to let me know what you would like to do. I’ll do my very best to meet you at the time that you request.
I hope to meet you when you are in town!

Bob
I go my gym in matina and will try and meet you for coffee today or tomorrow, i know F torres st, my wife says the coffee shop is Bo’s, now i have written it she is not sure, anyway doesn’t matter sure i will find it, see you later or tomorrow
best regards
Hi rick b - Just to clarify, I am not talking about Bo’s Coffee Club. There is a Coffee Shop inside Holiday Health Spa, which is part of the Health Spa. This is where I am talking about. Hope to see you!
Bob..you need an agent….just so happens my services are available..for a minimal % of the take….oh say…..45% and all the free coffee u can drink !!
What a life you have there Bob. Swim and then chat over a cup of coffee every morning while I’m so tired of snow over here in Canada. It’s not fair…
The spa looks like good place to meet. Any idea what the cost of the massages are? I think it would be real welcome after the long trip over from the States.
Hi brian - Not much money in this one, my friend! I am paying the full membership fee of Holiday Health Spa, and even paying my own coffee!
You would be most welcome to come by for a coffee, though!
Hi Eric - Yep, it’s a tough life, I admit! Jump on one of those airplanes and pay me a visit sometime, my friend!
Hi Randy C - I just checked with Holiday, the full body massage is P450 for an hour service. Just a tip, though - you can get the same thing for P200 or so at a lot of other locations around Davao!
Rick B is the first person to take me up on the meeting at Holiday Health Spa! Rick stopped by this morning, and we had a great talk. It’s nice to meet you Rick, and I hope to get to know you better in the future!
Hi Bob, it was really great to meet you too, and Feyma, it was / is like meeting old friends, i feeel i know you both well from your blog, likewise i hope we can see you now we are in Davao, i will invite you, stanby……………….
Bob, did you know that there is a Holiday Spa in Gensan already? Milper and I tried it last november. We thought the service was good. It’s on a new building that just across the street from Notre Dame. No pool though. But there is a coffee shop on the 3rd floor.
Hi Cathy - No, I didn’t know that. It’s funny, because when I met Rick B at Holiday this morning, we talked about GenSan a bit, and I told him that there was nothing like Holiday in GSC! Things have changed a lot since I was there!
Hey Bob, Im into weightlifting here and im just curious as to what kind of weights they have there at the Spa, and what does the yearly membership cost.
Let me know if you need me to send you a “Speedo” for your mourning swims.
Hi Bob- I hope we will manage to take you up on your offer or similar when we arrive later this month. As for now we both have a bad dose of flu courtesy of my travels.I have spent 18 of the last 29 days of February in Germany over 3 seperate occassions so I have no one to blame than myself.
Our friend here in the North East will be visiting her house in Davao at the same time as we are back so we will definately be in Davao in April.
Look forwards to our meet.
Hi Bob– Just want to thank you for the tip from your other website. I have found much of this information very useful and I have read much of the blogs concerning travel. I especially liked the podposts. Thank you. I suppose I will be traveling to Davao soon. Waiting on my passport. Who knows I might just bump into you at one of your favorite restaurants. Thanks again.
Hi Neal in RI - They have a full compliment of weights at the Spa. Memberships are available by the month, 3 months, 6 months or a year. For “all hours” access is P1,500 per month, cheaper for longer terms. My membership is for non-peak hours (after 9am, until 7pm) and that is P1,000 per month, or P2,700 for 3 months. Off the top of my head, I do not know the rates for one year.
Hi Jim - I hope that you get over that flu bug quickly! Looking forward to seeing you next month!
mahuhay bob what kind of iron do they have there i 6′ 5″ i lift about 375 to 425 in the gym i would like to work out with some heavyweights dumbells about 150 do they have that there? tredmills bikes so on so on i hopr to be there in june wells see
Hi tonka - I don’t have a rundown on every piece of equipment they have, but I am pretty sure that they can accommodate you there.
Hi Kelvin - I’m happy that you found some useful tips on my site! Enjoy your trip to Davao!
Some great information on this site. Out of interest does anyone know the cost of one-on-one swimming lessons at the spa.
Hi James - Yes, Holiday Health Spa does offer swimming lessons. Here are the rates:
Adults (over 21):
10 Sessions, 1 hour per session - P2,800
Children (under 21):
10 Sessions, 1 hour per session - P2,500

Hi Joey - Don’t worry, you don’t owe me anything at all! I would enjoy sitting down for that cup of coffee with you, though!
Morning Bob, I stumbled across your sites whilst researching for visit to my lady’s family in Maigo. The more info the better. I have enjoyed your read. If I can get to your part of the island I would love to catch up and have coffee. I must say you do seem to have nailed it, as far as living well goes. Good for you.
Hi Chris Baker - Thanks for your kind words. Indeed, if you make it to Davao as part of your journey, please do look me up! It will be my pleasure to have a good chat over a cup (or two!) of Coffee!
Yes, In the past you left an open offer to have coffee if I had a chance to get to Davao. That was over a year ago, I do drop in on your sites and read. I was involved with a business idea in Mindanao and I see you are selling the URL name. Things did not work out for me, I learned much in the process. I am involved in another way both in Mindanao and Luzon. It is for the most part Fine Art related. I was engaged in a business but I had artistic concerns too. In fact they were inter related the story and art would have been marketing tools. As you were talking about coffee and Davao being the Seattle of the Philippines. On occasion , I have describe the business I was working as a better Starbucks. Franchises need to distinguish themselves. My partner and I had a story and there was artwork involved. The point - it was marketing and could distinguished us. Te other point, I’m not involved in the business now and it was big loss but I am still involved in an artistic sense with some people there and considering what to do next.
Well, I am sure you hardly remember your offer to have coffee. But I do and I have found your websites useful and I don’t comment much but I read you were selling Mindanao.com … hum… I read the coffee posts and thought I’d tell you I didn’t forget your offer or your sites. I just haven’t gotten there and I’ve been dealing with a lot.
As always, blessed be your family and your work. ~ michael
Hi Michael Flannagan - Nice to hear from you, and I am sorry to hear that your business plan didn’t work out. Lately, I’ve been too busy to spend time at Holiday, but if you are in the area, just contact me and we’ll work out a cup of coffee.
Regarding Mindanao.com - it’s not certain that I will sell it. It’s a rather valuable Internet Property, and it takes finding the right buyer who is willing to part with that kind of money. If the right person comes along, I’ll part with it. If not, I’ll hold on to it.
Hi Bob,
I will try to see you maybe last week of Aug or 1st week of September 2008. Many things to discuss about you, projects for peace in Mindanao. Take care.
Prince
Hi Prince - OK, just let me know when you are in town.
hello bob, well here i am in iligan city, quite am change from michigan usa.am still trying to make up mind to live in iligan or move to cagayan de oro,but have many friends here already only here less than 2 months……had am close call all ready i was on the bus in same place milf attacked last week and killed some people and burn two buses…but lucky for me was 24hrs early the day before….just would like to get your view on things….joey here
Hi franklin swadling - Great to hear that you are already in Iligan! Yes, things are kind of bad right now, but I believe that if you give it a couple of months, things will pass over, and safety will again be OK. I like Iligan, and feel that it is a great place to live!
Hi Bob,
Frankly, I do not believe that the threat from people like MILF (or NPA for that matter) will pass over in a month or two. Sooner or later the violence will erupt again. Even if the Manila administration should strike a deal with them, a faction will continue their “business as usual”, I’m convinced. In fact, these guys do not represent anyone else than themselves. And since there is no one who legitimately represents the Muslim population, there is no point in negotiating with them. Even the none-Muslim indigenous people of Mindanao do not want to be a part of their autonomous region, which prompted MILF groups to burn down several Tboli settlements.
Some years ago, while you were still in the States planning to settle in the Philippines, we had a brief discussion by e-mail whether South Cotabato was a safe place for “Americanoes”, like us. I argued that it was not, in general. During my 14 months stay way up in the mountains among my Tboli friends, I never felt insecure. I knew they were vigilant and would warn me in time if the bad guys approached our settlement. But they were constantly worried for my safety, because the so called NPA passed several times through neighboring settlements during night time. Well, since then things have only become worth. The violence is escalating, though there are quite periods in between.
I do not want to put people off from visiting or settling down in Mindanao. It is an enjoyable place, but you should make sure that you are “in the right place at the right time”. And Bob, I think you are brave to disclose your daily routines on your web site, knowing that kidnapping for ransom is a somewhat popular business in the Phils. Though I do understand that you, as the editor of these pages, want to stay in touch with ordinary Filipinoes.
Regards
Karl
Hi Karl - I don’t recall ever saying anything about the threat from the MILF for the NPA passing in a month or two. If I said anything like that, I don’t know why I said it, but honestly I don’t think I ever said that. Frankly I don’t think that those threats will ever pass. At least not within our lifetime.
I don’t recall our conversation, that must have been at least 10 years ago. I do believe that most parts of South Cotabato are safe, but when you talk about staying “way up in the mountains” I would agree that that is generally not very safe. I’m talking more about in larger cities, for South Cotabato I would be talking about General Santos city.
As far as disclosing my daily routine, I don’t do that generally. When I mentioned something about having coffee at a well-known establishment in Davao city, I have absolutely no worries about that. I believe Davao is as safe as any city in the world, and I live my life that way.
Hi Bob – I was referring to the incident Michael Flannagan reported about where the MILF burned two busses, etc.
Yes, our conversation was about 10 years ago. I guess we are pretty much in line as to the safety of Filipino cities. I consider every city in South Cotabato as safe during daytime, maybe except for a few areas in General Santos City’s harbour area.
However, taking the first or last bus between these cities is an entirely different matter. I once had about the same experience as Michael Flannagan when I caught the last bus to Bacalod City on Negros. The next day that bus was attacked by the NPA and all passengers robed and killed. The bus driver escaped unharmed though, which I thought was odd at that time. But it makes sense in some ways. Should they kill the bus drivers too, there would soon be no more busses to prey on.
Hi Karl - Yes, much of what you say makes sense to me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Hello Bob, Im new to this site.
i came to Gensan in Setember to meet my email pal.
I am planning to visit again soon but i am disturbed by what has been said about Gensan.
I didnt detect any animosity last time , just curiosity,
Can you offer me any advice because i am planning a longer stay this time.
incling a visit to Davao.
Thanks
Dave
Hi dave w- when you say that you are disturbed by what has been said about Gensan, what do you mean? Something I said about GenSan? I don’t recall ever bad mouthing the place at all. Please clarify what you mean like this so that I can reply to you, right now I don’t understand your comment.
If you make it to Davao, I would be happy to sit down and have a chat.
I AM AN AMERICAN ARTIST planning on VISITING South Cotabato, in the near future to paint and to marry a woman that i have met there . any words of advise regarding my visit to the area, love to have some coffeewith you.
Hi ROB HARE- My advice would be to read up on the Philippines to learn a little bit of the culture before you come. Reading all of the archives here would be really good for you. My next advice would be to enjoy your trip!
If you make it to Davao, I’d be happy to have a cup of coffee with you.
Hi Bob,i have a lot friend from any different countries around the globe,i have boyfriend from England,he is planning to visit mindanao,i live in Kidapawan City, which is close by in Davao,i am so glad that you have your own website.it encourage my boyfriend to come to Mindanao, you know Mindanao has a bad

Bob,
Can you assist to promote our school through your website?
If you can visit Butuan City, I can offer you a cup of coffee with our faculty and staff or even visit to our family beach resort in Buenavista, 15 minutes travel from the Butuan city Airport.
Anyway, the school has a twice a month community newspaper, just log on at http://www.grandviews.20m.com
Regards,
Manny
Hi Manny Esteves- Unfortunately, I have never been to your school before, so I would have a hard time promoting it, given the fact that I don’t have personal knowledge of the quality of the school and such. Whenever I make it to Butuan, I could try to visit you.
Hi Mr. Bob,
How are you? have you heared about Dolphin Island in Oroqueta in Misamis Occidenatal? my boss just told me about that place… & based from what she said hmmm… i can picture it… it such a very nice Aquamarine Park… & im so eager to visit that place soon…i won’t really miss snorkelling when i get there…
regards,
Farrah
Dolphin Island, Misamis Occidental, Philippines - EXCERPT FROM THE BLOG OF ROCK_ANGEL_GRASS!!!
Being a beach bum, one of my favorite adventures are to beach/island hop and skin dive. Skin diving is simply diving with mask, snorkel and fins without the aid of compressed air tank. So normally during skin diving, the average depth that you can reach is about 10 feet. Since most of our coral reef formations here in Philippines are “fringing reef type”, most of the coral formations here are quite shallow. One of the good places where one can do such activities is the Island of Mindanao. The Island of Mindanao offers majestic and breathtaking sites where one can soak in the sun, go white water rafting in rivers, spelunk, hike, dive, island hop, trek etc..If you want to dive to some coral reef formation, go TARZAN among mangroves (exaggerating!), feed fishes and swim with them then I recommend you go to the Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park in Sinacaban, Misamis Occidental!
I have attached here some of the pictures my friends and I took during our escapade there!
How to get there?
If you’re from outside the Philippines:
Take a plane going to Manila. From Manila, take another plane to Dipolog City which is about 3 hours away from Sinacaban going south by bus. An alternate route is by barge from Manila to Ozamiz City. Ozamiz City is the capital of Misamis Occidental and is about 30 minutes away from Sinacaban by bus. Get off the bus when you get to Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park (MOAP). You can always ask the driver to get you to MOAP as it’s a famous place around the area and plus most bus drivers are nice and accommodating so don’t hesitate to ask for directions!
For more information on how to get there, you can visit this site:
http://www.misocc.gov.ph
Where you can stay?
MOAP has dorm type and cottage type accomodations.
What you expect to experience?
MOAP has mini zoo where you can find exotic animals such as Philippine crocodiles, bird, tarsier, monkeys and snakes. The zoo is situated right within a mangrove area and the animal cages can be accessed through a network of elevated bamboo bridge. Since the zoo is within a mangrove area it gets flooded with sea water during high tides so that one can also observe fishes, jellyfishes, etc. swimming below the bridge. Aside from the zoo, you can also visit their fish ponds and aquariums that house Philippine Carps, fresh water prawns, lobsters and other yummy fishes. So if you want to eat fresh sea food, just purchase them by the kilo and ask the restaurant there to cook it for you.
DOLPHIN ISLAND
Of course, your trip in MOAP is not complete if you don’t hop (figuratively, of course!) towards the DOLPHIN ISLAND! To get there, just cross another bamboo bridge towards the floating restaurant. This restaurant is situated on the sea (hence, floating) about 100 meters (if I’m not mistaken) from the coast. You can ask the restaurant’s staffs that you want to go to the island and they can arrange the trip for you, it’s that easy! It takes about 15 minutes to get from MOAP to the island on a pump boat or forever if you swim (kidding). If you plan to snorkel, the best time to leave for Dolphin Island is early in the morning during high tide. Once you get to the island, it’s best to order what you want to have for lunch on the island’s restaurant first as it takes quite a bit of a time for them to “process” your order Then after ordering for your food, you can cross another network of bamboo bridge to observe the dolphins (hence the island’s name!), tortoises (average length of adults is 1 meter) and other cute and colorful fishes! If you’re not satisfied, you can rent snorkeling gears (mask, snorkel and fins). They are usually cheap so don’t worry about spending a lot.. and actually, you can bring your own gears if you have them.If you’re not a confident swimmer, you can hire a small boat/canoe so you can kayak your way around the island! For booking, visit
http://www.dolphinisland.com
Hi Farrah- Thanks for visiting, it’s nice to see you here too! I didn’t know you follow this site!
Thanksf or sharing about the Aquamarine Park!
Hi BOB, its a great pleasure meeting you, here its mae from wao.

Hi mae - There are no “restrictions” on traveling to Mindanao. The embassy is advising (not restricting) such travel. Honestly, there are no problems in Wao, CdO,Davao, etc. I would not worry about making such a trip.

Bob,
Is the “We Are Inn Hotel” easy to find for a 1st time foreign visitor to the Philippines arriving in the AM via Cebu-Pacific Airlines? Would reservations be required? Are you still frequenting the Spa coffee shop on F. Torres as mentioned in the past? I’d like to touch base with you before venturing out to the countryside halfway to General Santos City to surprise my wife where she is on an emergency visit to family.
–James
Hi James - I think that any Taxi Driver will know where “We Are Inn” is located, it is a fairly well known hotel. For reference, it is across the street from GMall on JP Laurel, if that helps at all. No, I am not available at the health club any longer, these days. However, if you want to get together when you are in town, just give me a call when you get here. My cell number is (0915) 216-0300.
Hello Bob,
My name is Chandra and i am from Dipolog City (somewhere in Mindanao.
I am new to this also new travel agency called Double Event Tours and Services here in Dipolog City. Our office will be launched on the 12th of this month.

Our city is close to Dapitan City. It is where Fantasyland is located. It is an amusement park with rides and other shows. Both Dipolog and Dapitan have beautiful tourist spots and you will surely enjoy your trip here, should you come.

Chandra Quintos
Double Event Tours and Services
Hi Chandra - Sure, I’ve been to Dipolog before, it’s a nice place, and I enjoyed visiting there. Can’t say I can make it back soon, but someday I’ll be passing through again.
How far is Dipilog from Davao City? Just wondering, so we could go to the amusement park. Stevo
Hi stevo - There are two different routes you could take between Dipolog and Davao. The southern route would be the quickest, maybe 10 hours or so, but you have to pass through some territory that may not be so friendly. I have passed through myself, but I probably wouldn’t recommend it unless you have some connections with people that can assist you if you run into trouble. The other way would be through Bukidnon, and probably 12 hours, perhaps more than that. A lot depends on how long you have to wait for the ferry to Ozamiz. That northern route is safer, though.
