Very Public Toilets!

Nature has made it easier for a man to have to urinate (from now on I will call it whiz), and thus when caught short we can normally do a whiz very quickly and discreet. That is in our home countries,

Here it is a National competition to see who can whiz in the most strange place.
Here is the top five place i have seen.

1/I was working at a Resort having lunch when five yards away a member of staff just whizzed whilst I was eating and even waved over to me. The C r(toilet) was 30 secs from him but he told me later this is where we all whizz!! And guess what no one else in the restaurant was bothered only me.

2/Waiting for a friend to collect me outside my house I saw a guy walk up to me and whizz onto my wall and even say “hi” as he was doing so. When he finished I expected him just to walk off, but he did not he got a set of keys out and went into next door house. Apparently my wall was a better wall to whiz on.

3/On a late night drinking session in Cayagan De Oro I was on a jeepney that was travelling very fast when my fellow passenger stood up and whis out the back!! I am very glad there was no wind or it may have caused an unfortunate rain…if you know what I mean.

4/I saw a very important government official at a drinking session go over to the CR and found it full, so this well known person just did it outside whilst still having his conversation with officials.

5/When on a bus I saw a mother hold her baby to the window and let it whiz as we drove, again lucky it was blown back to the customers further back.

Now it is deemed ok here for any man to stop at any time to whizz, even if he is standing next to you. But what do the poor ladies have to do?? I hope that question will continue to go unanswered.

    Hi John

I have found exactly the same. In our place we have perfectly clean gents toilets outside the bar, but do you think anyone will use it….well very seldom. The nearest wall or tree or even the open air seems to be the preferred target, and then the ensuing stale smell of whiz is disgusting.

Be it day or night fellows just come outside the bar door and “whiz” away without a thought for anyone, even if there are a crowd of ladies around it will make no difference.

I often went up to them and and asked them what the hell they thought they were doing and would you do this in your own house, but that just falls on deaf ears.

To be honest I think it’s a filthy and degrading habit and I will continue to give people a hard time for doing it in our place.

And if someone here says to me well if you don’t like it go someplace else this is our country, my answer to them is, show some basic dignity and respect, if not for yourself then for others. Obviously emergency cases is a totally different situation, but when facilities are available use them.

As you can see John this is a pet hate of mine and thanks for affording me the opportunity to air it.

    Jack

This is one of the reasons we won’t let people drink outside our store. They will just go around the corner and whiz on the wall! Also having a bunch of drunks outside your store might kill business lol.

John, this is a topic that has also perplexed me, at times. Though the public toilets in this country can often be horrendous (I am thinking bus stations here), I have noticed, like you, that people tend to go whenever the need strikes them. It is my conclusion that, in some respects, it is partially cultural. As Jack mentioned above, he’ll ask an offender if they have no shame, and quite frankly, they do not feel that it is anything to have shame over. I say this because when I am out in the provinces, in particular, I see this frequently. Becky’s nephews, kids, just seem to drop trou and go. This is how they are raised. Perhaps it is the lack of privacy or the belief that it is just another bodily function. To relate things even further, I have often wondered how private a couple can be in “relations” while in a two room hut with 15 other people. I’ve asked Rebecca and only gotten a couple of very vague answers.

In any event, be thankful you do not live in India. That is not “mud” you see in the gutters on the side of the street, if you catch my drift…

I fully agree with you I have tried to talk to my friends about this and they look at me to say what’s the problem. One thing I neglected to say in the article is that one guy who whizz as I was eating in the restaurant one of his defence to this when i challenged him is that his boss also has a whizz here even if the toilet is near!!

I would love to buy at the smaller places, but the smell of whiz on approach just means I cannot. The pinoy people are some of the proudest and personal hygiene is very important to them. Yet the whiz and go does not seem to bother them.

Some of the toilets are getting better yet in a very up market hotel a man cam behind me to see I was using the urinal and instead of using the toilet decided to whizz into the sink!! I decided that washing my hands was a waste of time, and he was a suited gentleman and immaculate in his appearance.

  5. macky says:

hence the common sight of the words “BAWAL UMIHI DITO” (do not urinate here) painted on many walls.
Bob - that sink story topped everything. I have never heard of anything like that.

Ever wonder what the women do? In down town Cebu is saw and older lady that had been begging earlier reach under her dress and pull her panties down. Then she leaned up against the wall of the building and a stream came from between her legs. My first thought was to avoid that part of the side walk for a while. My second thought was since this is close to the Hotel I am staying at how many times have I already walked through this area?

    hi John,
am a filipina living here in Naples, Florida USA. I was driving home fr the grocery store when LO and behold , theres a big truck blocking the road. I said, “What the heck?” As i tried to maneuver to the side, what did i see, the driver whizzing away on the side of his rig.

NOw, Cant say its only filipinoes now…
    maybe its the men….

    judt kidding…

I must admit I have done it when I have too, but the point being I try to do it when no one can see. I would humiliated if I was seen, but here it is just part of life.

    Larry
Maybe she was A SHE MALE LOL

  9. rob says:

By the way, this no longer happens in Metro Manila (and I’ve never seen it happen in jeepneys, even before). I guess it really depends which place you stay.

  10. Migs says:

Yes, John, I can attest to what Rob has said above; it no longer happens in beautiful, clean, and disciplined Manila.

  11. Dan Mihaliak says:

I would say it is acceptable for a filipino to do this but i wonder what would happen if a visitor (white person) did this?

  12. john says:

    Dan

    You make an excellent point.
I assume we will be charged fined and on TV. Also I am sure like many laws in the Philippines that there must be something in the law that states not to do ot, but as usual it will be ignored.
    Migs
Have you smelt he Baywalk recently??

  13. Dom says:

It is an ingrained habit by Pinoys that also happens in first world countries, but only discreetly. Here in canada, there are no pay per pee or pay per poop, like in the Philippines. Almost every establishment have clean washrooms. So you don’t have to go find a wall (or pay) every time you need to poop or take a leak. I’m glad though that Pinoys are now trying to get rid of this habit.

  14. roy says:

Ok, we, pinoys shld admit that we are “casual” abt this habit of peeing in the open. It’s cultural, I’m sorry. Apart from the smell though, it can be debated that piss is good for the trees. But for concrete walls, it’s really nasty. For non pinoys, this habit is really disgusting. When I got here in the US, I had never peed in the bushes even if I could. Too scared to be caught.

  15. Ok John I only just noriced this thread, but this is a subject that is dear to my heart, I was parked up waiting for my asawa who had gone to Mang Inasal for some take away, I saw this pinoy come up to my 4×4 and whiz down the passenger tyre, as I have tinted windows I think he did not realize I was in the cab.

    How abotu that one ?

  16. john says:

Sorry Peter for delay in responding I went to the toilet in the normal manner.

This subject seems to have highlighted a big cultural difference and its strange one to dwell on too, however as the Philippines grows I think this culture needs to be modified. I never see this in Thailand,Vietnam OR WHAT ABOUT jAPAN.

i HOPE THIS CAN BE GROWN OUT OF THE CULTURE AS THIS BELONGS TO 500 YEARS AGO NOT NOW

  17. Bruce says:

    John,

Your final comment is like I joke I use here. I say I believe in equal rights for women in the Philippines, they should be able to pee in the side of the road too.

  18. Phil R. says:

U know what they say ..When in rome do as the romans do …hee hee

  19. fun says:

Its difficult to change a person’s habit as this has been his practice all the while. Maybe we can promote the use of toilets on TV and shows how silly it would be not to use the toilets in front of the kids or ladies in tv clips and all these to be sponsored by TV companies.
