Furnishing a home

sofa

Since LiP is focused on the interest of expats in the Philippines and those who want to move here, there are many inquiries as to the cost of moving. Your biggest expense in moving probably won't be rent, or the tickets to get here. Once you arrive, you need to furnish your flat or ship furniture here to use. Jeff Foxworthy once talked about his flat during his college days as part of his stand up act. Though funny, it had a grain of truth to it. I, like most people, when younger, would see one of those big cable spools near a dumpster, and would think, "coffee table!"  There are millions of uses for milk crates. Sleeping on a cheap mattress … [Read more...]

100tn

Well, that doesn't say much, doesn't it? This article marks my 100th posting on LiP. I've really enjoyed writing these articles over the last two years, and hope to continue to do so, as long as Bob will have me. Yes, sometimes I'm a bit, let's say, opinionated, and sometimes a bit of a smartass, but I've tried to write in a fair and balanced manner, even if I've raised a few neck hairs on some folks along the way... Nothing personal: There will always be differences of opinion. So, in honor of my 100th posting, please see my checklist below, entitled: 100 Things to Do BEFORE you Move to the Philippines... 100. Decide, really decide, … [Read more...]

Nosedive

US Dollar value over the past 12 months

It's a nosedive.  Freefall.  Hard times ahead, perhaps. I'm talking about the US Dollar exchange rate for Philippine Pesos.  I predicted in my predictions for 2010 that the US Dollar was going to experience some tough times in terms of exchange rate, and so far, I'm afraid that my prediction is proving to be correct.  I wish it were not true. We started off 2010 with the Dollar trading at P46.14 to the Peso.  Over the past year the Dollar has traded as high as 48.7 to the Peso.  Currently, the US Dollar is trading at the low end of the P44 range, around P44.2, depending on when you check it.  So, this calendar year we have lost about … [Read more...]

STOP! – STAY AWAY!

CAUTION:  HARD HAT AREA.  Protective headgear required beyond this point. STOP!  Don’t come here – stay away.  I’ll only say this one more time – DON’T! I’ve been perusing the Live in the Philippines articles and their associated comments written in the past six months.  Somehow, I’ve concluded that it is time for periodic adjustment to the “balance” control.  If I was just now discovering this web magazine, I’d be full of starry-eyed, "paradise found" dreams.  I’d have discovered a land of magic. The few dollars (or whatever currency you may be accustomed to using) in my pocket magically turn into a vast … [Read more...]

Going Home, Part 2

With my brother during the Dubai Boat Show 2007 (we worked in the same company)

After two weeks rendezvous in the RP and HongKong, we went back to Abu Dhabi. I submitted my resignation letter on November 2007. My boss had asked me to stay until the end of March when the Dubai Boat Show was over. John wanted us to go home in December, just in time for Christmas. It was not easy to break this news to my then fiancé, and he felt very bad. When I say having a foreigner for a boyfriend or husband, it’s no beating around the bush. Take it or leave it sometimes. He has his moments, although he understands my situation as a breadwinner. A little extra savings will help me put up a small scale business back home. I just could not … [Read more...]

HEY YOU! 'Bro!

(PREFACE NOTE:  To be fair, I will state for the record that SMART does care and generally does listen to its customers.  They've established social media services on Twitter @ Smartcares and willingly accept comments regarding customer concerns via e-mail at ISMS@smart.com.ph ) As much as I’d like it to be, this is not an “Open Letter to SMART Bro.”  It’s more like venting my frustrations than anything else.  I mean, I’ve been pretty doggone patient and understanding over these past four months.  Things seem to have arrived at a point, however, where I am starting to feel as though someone is taking advantage of my patience … [Read more...]

Constant Change

Almost everything in life is changing constantly, that shouldn't be a big surprise.  Very few things remain the same over the long term.  One place where we American expats are seeing a lot of change lately is in the value of the US Dollar.  The US Dollar, in the past few weeks, has been losing value against almost every world currency, and that includes the Peso. I can remember the years when I was living in the States.  We would hear on the news that the dollar was losing value, or was getting stronger against different world currencies.  It would be on the news, and people would talk about it a bit - a "strong dollar" or a "weak dollar" … [Read more...]

What a dinner!

What a great dinner it must have been!  Only the best, you know. What?  You think I'm talking about some dinner that Feyma and I had at a local restaurant or something?  Nope!  I'm talking about Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's dinner that she had while in New York recently. President Arroyo went to the USA recently to meet with President Obama and some other official business.  In addition to Obama, she met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and probably with some Congressmen and Senators, although I'm not sure on those.  After completing her business in Washington, DC, she and her official traveling party moved on … [Read more...]

What currency do you think in?

If you have lived in a foreign country like the Philippines for an extended time, it is likely that after some time, in financial terms, you will begin to think in the currency of the country you are living in, instead of the country where you came from. When you first come to live in the Philippines, if you are from the United States, it is likely that every time you buy something, or even look at something you might buy, you will always convert the Peso price into Dollars.  In other words, if the price is marked at P300, you will calculate in your mind how many Dollars that is, even though you will pay in Pesos.  Like I say, when you first … [Read more...]

Rental Thoughts Philippines

As many of you already know, my wife and I rent the home we are living in right now in the Philippines.  To many Americans, long accustomed to buying more house than they can afford because “real estate always goes up” renting instead of buying is perceived as a very bad thing … an admission that I am unsuccessful or one step ahead of personal bankruptcy or the bill collector.  Yet another “ran off to the Philippines failure” in some people’s view, I am sure. Well opinions are just like armpits, everyone is entitled to a few, but for those that do feel that way, my own opinion is, you would be wrong.  I am heading into my retirement … [Read more...]
