  1. Hello,

    Would like to buy and setup a back up generator for the in-laws house. Although I am in Canada my wife and son are currently visiting. Just got a text from my wife they have been without power for two days and they want to buy generator. If anyone has any advice on what type and where to buy I am open to recommendations. The farm is located in Calatrava, Negros Occ, Philippines. Looking for store and contact where to buy either in San Carlos City, Bacolod City or Cebu city.

    I told them to find the nearest hotel with air-con and stay there till power is restored. In the mean time I am open to any suggestions from the forum.

    Thx,
    Bill

  3. Hi Miss August,

    Thanks for the info and link I have passed this on to the wife. The family will visit the store in the next couple of days and hopefully we can find something suitable. At least by the time I arrive in January we should have a generator in place for my comfort. (o;

    The secret is sending the wife first to fix and organize everything for the new house we built for the in-laws so by the time I arrive I can enjoy my vacation. Hehehe

    Take care,
    Bill

    Hi Bill,

    It might be wise to take an inventory of appliances the generator will be required to power during a blackout. The price of a generator is directly affected by the capacity. If you get one that is too large then the operating costs are high as well as the purchase price. It is also important to install a switch to the house that will prevent power from the generator from going back through the main line. This will keep an electric company worker from getting killed if they are repairing a broken line.

  5. Hi Tom,

    I have found some very good sites online that help with generator sizing. Basically you list off all your electrical appliances and it gives you the size of generator plus adds 20% for future needs. Will take your advice and have an electrician install a switch so we do not run into any potential problems like you suggested.

    My concern is finding a reputable dealer and buying a quality product so we can get long-term worry free use.

    Thanks for the advice,

    Hi Bill;
    I’ve had a Honda 1100KW Gas Generator for 11 years; it’s hardwired in to the house circuit, and prior to starting it you must shut off your main breaker, that will protect any power workers on the line. It will also need its own breaker and alarm to tell you when power has been restored. (I use a simple light bulb on the outside of my shed.)
    I can run my house like the power is on, with 2 exceptions, my 2.5 horsepower water pump, and may only use one air/con (Guess who’s?) while using the generator. Decide whether you want diesel or gas. There is good and bad about both. I have the Honda people come twice a year to service it, (buy a brand that has Service Reps. In the Philippines) and it still run’s like new after all this time. It has paid for its self over and over just by keeping my 2 Refs., and freezer running during my many brownouts . And I’ve yet to miss a Baseball game during the World Series or playoffs.
    There is a lot of great advice in the above blogs!!!!

  7. Hello Everyone,

    Just want to thank everyone for the advice received. We went ahead and ordered a new Honda Generator which will arrive in the next week or so. My wife has source out an experience electrician to install and setup correctly. In the mean time power is back on and working and hopefully we should have the new generator setup and ready for the next power interruption.

    Please again accept my thanks for everyone’s input.

    Regards,
    Bill

  8. hi bill
    its nice to see someone who knows negros occidental in the forum, Its a pity i didnt know of your problem beforehand as I have only just arrived back from San Carlos City, Negros. thankfully ondoy didnt do too much damage in the area, though I did hear of a ceres liner going over a ridge in the don salvador area.All that said the main reason i was in San Carlos City ( apart from being with Daisy) was to meet with the Mayor of San CarlosCity and the F C ledesma Foundation to discuss the setting up of just such a project to help supply small generators for the poor in the area. The generators I was talking about where typically small wind turbine types with out going in to too much detail the meeting went well and I will presently be contacting foundations such as the Gates foundation for aid with the project as it also includes drainage and sanitation projects too. In the beach area you live an ideal option would be a small wind turbine, ok so they wont be able to power everything
    but they can give the essential lighting etc indeed you will probably know already that the resort on sipaway, whispering palms uses the very same type of wind generator's, all that being said I am hoping to be back out there early next year calatrava is one of the areas i visit and i suspect it was your place that was using a chainsaw in march lol, as soon as i know my plans maybe i can pop along and say hi as my long term plans include living in negros occidental. good luck with your backup generator plans
    and i hope we can speak again soon .
