I received an interesting e-mail alert today from PayPal. Apparently they have a new economical way to send money from the US to the Philippines. I haven't read all the fine print (like both of you probably have to have a PayPal account) but is may be worth looking into. Only 50 cents to send $100 USD sounds pretty good. Sending larger amounts: $2.50 for $500 USD.
As a side note, like airline carriers, once one company lowers rates perhaps other competing companies will do the same.
PayPal balances and pulling funds directly from your bank account seem to be the most economical. Pulling funds from a credit or debit card are a little higher.
A final disclaimer: I have not done any of this stuff myself. Just received the e-mail today from PayPal (because I have a PayPal account).
