As the topic has arisen in various discussions, and as I am always interested in cheap, clean, continuous power, I thought I'd start a topic for the resourcing of information on people's opinions/technical advice, distributor locations around the country, & to see if any members are already using solar and/or wind power generation. I had planned to have our beach house run on Solar power, but I'm just paying for it to be built, my wife isn't interested in my opinion(lol), "Maybe it will, maybe it won't", is the only info. I have.

I recognize that the initial costs deter most from using solar power, but the advantage of no monthly power bill & a lack of "brown-outs" makes one think. Your thoughts?

Imagine survives on wind, and solar. My thoughts were to build a house on 12volt with a deisel generator backup. We have 4 panels, and one KISS wind generator. We have gone as far as 2 weeks with just this. We have a fridge, freezer, tv, and most comforts of home......i2f

That is, of course, where my thoughts originate. The only disadvantage to solar panels on a boat is the lack of room, which would not be of concern with a home. I'm not sure I'd want the noise of a wind generator, though I understand that the newer models are quieter?

    Mike,

I have an old KISS wind generator, and it's pretty quiet. I have people all the time stop by in an anchorage to ask the brand. You can also set them away from the house. WEe would like to build up on Mt. Apo, so we can get the tradewinds......i2f

    John,
My wife is sitting beside me, so I've been explaining the reason I started the thread. She is a big fan of solar panels, since our last boat. Lol, she says you shouldn't move to the area around Mt. Apo - too dangerous!

There is a pretty constant breeze over on Talikud. While there for family reunion, my sister-in-law & her husband(France) looked at a pretty good deal there. I'll ask him if he's going to buy &, if not, I'll message you the details on C&S forums.

I have a second lot in Tagpopongan that I'm going to have a nipa hut built on & power with solar. The other lot there will have a deep water dock, which should be finished by the time you arrive. Unfortunately, my wife had 4 2-bedroom townhouses built there, instead of the 2-bedroom nipa hut I wanted. If someone chimes in on where to get solar gear in RP, maybe you can advise me on a power station that would serve the dock for visiting boats? My knowledge of systems is limited.

My wife's feelings aside, if your wife is well-connected around Mt. Apo area, you could become a local hero if you can spare a few watts for the neighbours. Just a thought.

    Mike,

I keep hearing the warnings, but unlike most members here. I fit in pretty well. People mistaken me for a larger Filipono, and speak Visayan, or Tagalog to me. We will stay within the area of Davao also.

My understanding is the Mayor owns property up near where we want to be. I always have in mind how far away from the city proper we can get before it is an issue. My goal ius to get above the humidity, and below the cold.......i2f

  7. Is there a company in the Philippines that sells solar panels and batteries? Or company that installs them? I was wondering why it isn't used more there. There's so much sun.

That is the question, Alex. I've seen an address for a company in Manila - will "dig it out" later - but haven't found anything in the south, yet.

This is what I've come up with so far. Greenpowerphils, Inc. seems to be the sole major supplier. Note to entrepreneurs: They do not seem to have a distributor in the Southern Philippines. As well, though I wouldn't have the time to be fully involved for the next few years, I would be most interested to discuss investing in a systems distribution company in the Davao area - as a silent partner/ shareholder - with the right people.

    1) Greenpowerphils, Inc.(Alternative energy systems)
    East Drive Marymount
    Los BaƱos, Laguna 4030, Philippines

    2) Amici Mercantile(Solar water heaters)
    Manila:
86 Mayon corner M. Cuenco Streets
Sta. Mesa Heights, Quezon City 1114

    Cebu:
    Doors 111-112 MGA Arcade A. C. Cortes
    Mandaue City, Cebu

    Pampanga:
    Aiho Enterprise
    1348 Miranda Ext.
    Angeles City, Pampanga

    3) DPY Mercantile(solar water heaters, flat plate solar collectors)
    Unit 1A Manggahan Village
    A. Rodriguez Avenue, Pasig City, Philippines

  12. Yes, SunPower solar panels are manufactured near Manila. Lots of so-called American products are actually made (assembled - cheaper labor, etc) in other countries including the Philippines. These links talk about the products.

The fact that they are assembled in the Philippines does not necessarily mean you can purchase them there -- someone in the Philippines will need to determine that.

Good luck. I am interested in this technology too.

  14. Glimer,

Accounting Issues? You must be kidding. I always thought accounting issues was a "given" in the Philippines ... sort of like a built in cost of doing business! lol
